Training & Activities

Picture
The Salina Kennel Club holds three sessions of puppy and basic obedience classes. Winter sessions begin in January. Summer sessions begin in June. Fall sessions begin in September.  All classes are taught by volunteers who love dogs!
Enrollment for classes will occur on the Sunday before the start of courses, & will be taken until all available slots are filled. For more information on slot openings contact Training Director Pam Homeier at (785) 829-1337. Class sizes are strictly limited. All dogs participating in classes or events on the premises of the Salina Kennel Club are required to have current vaccinations. Please check prerequisites for each course. Your dog must be in good health, and have current rabies vaccinations as well as vaccinations recommended by your veterinarian. When enrolling in a class, please bring a copy of your dogs shot records (digital copies are accepted) and payment for class(es), checks or cash are accepted.  All classes based on enrollments and availability of instructors. Salina Kennel Club reserves the right to cancel classes, change class dates, and close enrollment due to enrollment numbers. Class sizes are limited.

Training Information

In all Obedience & Agility classes you will be the trainer of your dog. Trainers MUST be at least 12 years old and physically capable of controlling the dog. Junior handlers must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Family members are welcome to attend but children must be supervised at all times. Salina Kennel Club reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment or, close enrollment when the maximum number of dogs is reached.

Canine Disposition:
Vicious dogs will not be allowed to participate in classes.

Canine Health Requirements:
All canines entered in a SKC class must have current immunization (within the past twelve (12) month period) for Rabies, Distemper, Hepatitis, and Parvo-Virus, be healthy and you must present a Veterinarian’s certificate stating this to the SKC Training Recorder prior to the second (2nd) class.

Training Methodology:
The kennel club trainers will use training techniques based on a
positive reinforcement model. Trainers will strive to be flexible to account for the various
age and skill levels of the individuals but cannot accommodate every training technique.
However, training techniques for individual teams may vary as per age, skill and personality of the handler and canine. Safety of all individuals/families and canines will be a priority.
Safety concerns may result in special conditions being implemented by the trainers.

Class Requirements:
The Salina Kennel Club will furnish the training area. The owners of each canine will be expected to furnish a six (6) foot leather or web lead and a plain buckle or snap buckle collar. Approved training collars of the “slip” or “pinch” variety are also allowed.
A parent or other responsible adult is expected to stay with any youth under 18 during class. In the event a parent cannot stay for class, parents must make prior arrangements with the instructor.
All fees for classes are credited to the account of the Salina Kennel Club, Inc., as all instruction is done by volunteer members of the Club. Our instructors only recompense is the hope that another canine and master have reached a greater understanding of the needs and desires of one another. This makes a happier life for everyone.
